Sam Ride

Chapter 1(Sam’s POV)

“Come on, we’re getting you out of here.” Jeb said as he unlocked all of the

cages, except mine.

            “Wait, Jeb!” I wailed.

“I’m sorry, Sam.” Jeb whispered. The kids all followed him. The one with blonde hair, Max, looked at me apologetically. I was silently crying as Jeb lead them out.

I would get him. That was almost four years ago. I’m fourteen now, and still at the school. I waited for the perfect time. I was getting out today. I had the perfect plan. It was time. I ripped the bars off of my cage and leapt out. I silently choked the eraser. Once I was out in the training grounds, I snapped open my white wings, except for the brown spots here and there, and took off. I had to find Max, my sister. I had to find the flock. I had to warn them. I flew for three days.

I was flying when it happened. I heard a gunshot. I swerved to avoid the bullet. I turned. The erasers were facing the flock. One of them had a gun pointed at Max. They were all held back. The rest happened in slow mode. The eraser pulled the trigger.

“No!” I yelled. I pushed Max out of the way and turned just in time for the bullet to hit my shoulder. It was wedged in there. I screamed and started falling. I closed my eyes and waited for my body to hit the ground, but it didn’t. I opened my eyes to find Max holding me up in her arms. I was panting.

“Is she okay?” The dark haired boy, Fang, asked.

“I don’t know.” Max said truthfully. I fell unconscious after that.

I woke up with a start. I was in a cave. Everyone was asleep except for Max and Fang. They were sitting next to each other, silently looking at me as I pulled myself into a sitting position.

“Max.” I whispered.

“Sam.” She whispered back. We stood up and hugged. Fang looked confused. I held on tight to Max, my sister.

“Fang, Sam is my sister.” Max said. Fang’s jaw dropped open. I allowed a small smile to come across my usually emotionless face. The flock was awake now. Sun filtered in through the cave entrance. I got up to cook. I was an unusually good cook.

“What do you guys have to eat?” I asked, turning to Max.

“There’s stuff in Iggy’s pack.” Max answered pointing to a battered pack. I stuck my hand in and pulled out some hot dogs. I smiled to myself. I loved hotdogs. I got the fire started. I pulled tin foil out of Max’s pack and wrapped the hotdogs up. I put them in the middle of the fire.

“I usually cook.” Iggy said.

“Oops, sorry.” I said, sounding apologetic.

“It’s alright, these are good anyways. Where did you learn to cook like this?” He said.

“It just always came to me.” I said. I knew he was blind. He was nice. I looked at the rest of the flock.

“So, does anyone know where Jeb is?” I asked. They looked surprised.

“Umm, no, why?” Max asked.

“I’m going to get him. He left me, like you guys.” I growled. I wasn’t mad at them, I was mad at Jeb.

“We tried to get you out.” Max whispered, sounding hurt.

Fang put his arm around her shoulders and glared at me. The whole flock was glaring at me. Max wasn’t, but she didn’t seem to notice. I threw my hotdog down.

“I never said I was mad at you!” I screamed and launched myself off of the cliff that we were staying on.

“Sam, wait.” I heard a male’s voice. I turned it was Iggy. I was crying.

“What, come to beat me up?” I asked, my voice breaking.

“No, Sam, you have to understand that seeing you is a big shock to Max.” Iggy said.

“And you don’t think that’s what it feels like to me?” I asked, clearly shocked.

“No, we just…” He was interrupted by Fang.

“We just want you to leave. We can’t have Max worrying about her sister.” He growled.

“Fine, if that’s how you all feel, then I’ll leave. I thought you were nicer than this, but I guess not.” I said, yanking my arm from Iggy’s soft grip and flying off. I looked back. The five flock members were standing on the cliff. Max burst out from behind Fang and Iggy and launched herself off of the cliff. Fang followed her, grabbing her arm and pulling her back. She yanked her arm and followed me.

“Sam, why are you leaving. Fang said it was because they were mad at you.” Max said.

“They were. Fang said that they all felt that they need a leader who can’t be worrying about her sister.” I managed to choke out between sobs. I looked around. I could feel a bad vibe. Suddenly, we were surrounded by erasers with wings. I screeched and leaped at one. I did a graceful flip off of its back as it fell. The flock came to help Max, but they all clustered around me. Max helped me fight them off with Iggy, Gazzy, Angel, and Nudge while Fang stood back and watched silently. Max flew up to him.

“Why didn’t you help?” She asked.

“I don’t trust Sam.” He said.

“Obviously you don’t, Fang, but get this through that thick skull of yours. I’m Max’s sister and I’m not losing her again. I’m exactly like you. I’m on the run, I’m a bird kid, and I’m staying, so either you start trusting me, or you live without my trust for the rest of your life, am I clear?” I said. The flock looked shocked. Nobody told Fang off. Fang looked shocked. I was glaring at him with my hands on my hips. His shocked expression cleared away.

“Not yet.” He said. I knew that meant that he didn’t trust me yet, but he would give me a chance. I nodded and turned to the flock.

“Where to now, oh great one?” I asked Max.

“Let’s go to Hawaii.” The African American girl, Nudge said. I laughed.

“Not until Max and I save the world. I think I owe you an explanation.” I said. We flew to the cave. I sat down and motioned for the flock to do the same.

“Well, you see, Max and I have a mission. Max doesn’t know that that mission includes me. Max and I are meant to save the world together. I figured this out from the school. Before I escaped, I got these.” I pulled some folded pieces of paper out of my pocket. I handed them to Max. They were about how they were going to keep us apart so that Max couldn’t save the world. She looked up at me. Her eyes twinkled with happiness at the thought of saving the world with her sister. I’m sure that’s what my eyes looked like. I smiled. She was smiling and looking at her flock, who were reading the papers. Fang looked angry. I heard a growling.

“Oh great, more erasers.” I said, standing up. Max and the flock did the same. Fang stood protectively in front of Max, but she came to stand by me. Max and I were twins. This was going to be fun.

Chapter 2(Fang’s POV)

The erasers had captured us. They were all holding us. An eraser pointed a gun at Max and pulled the trigger.

“No!” I heard someone screech and a girl that looked exactly like Max, except with brown hair, pushed Max and turned. The bullet wedged into her shoulder and she screamed and started falling. Max caught her.

“Is she okay?” I asked.

“I don’t know.” Max answered. We flew to a cave for the night. Max came to sit by me.

“She looks like you.” I said. Max nodded. The girl woke up. She slowly sat up and looked at Max.

“Max.” She whispered.

“Sam.” Max whispered back. The stood up and hugged.

“Fang, Sam is my sister.” Max said. I gaped at them. Sam made breakfast. It was as good as Iggy’s. Sam asked if anyone knew where Jeb was. Max said no and asked why.

“I’m going to get him. He left me, like you.” She said. I put my arm protectively around Max’s shoulder. The flock was glaring at her.

“I never said I was mad at you.” She screamed, throwing her hot dog down and leaping off of the cliff. Iggy followed her. They talked and I flew up.

“We just…” Iggy said.

“We just want you to leave. We can’t have Max worrying about her sister.” I finished. Sam had an outbreak and flew away.

“What did you do?” Max screeched.

“We were mad at her.” I said. I tried to pull her back as she flew towards Sam, but she yanked her arm away from my grip and flew towards Sam. Erasers with wings then came. The flock helped Max get them off of Sam.

“Why didn’t you help?” Max asked me.

“I don’t trust Sam.” I said.

“Obviously you don’t Fang, but get this through that thick skull of yours. I’m Max’s sister and I’m not losing her again. I’m exactly like you. I’m a bird kid, I’m on the run and I’m staying. So either you better start trusting me or live the rest of your life with out my trust, am I clear?” Sam said sternly, hands on her hips, glaring at me. I gaped at her. Nobody had the courage to talk to me like that, not even Max.

“Not yet.” I said. She nodded in understanding and turned to Max. After telling us the story of how Max is supposed to save the world with Sam, Erasers came. I tried to stand in front of Max, but she went to stand next to her sister. I’m losing her, I thought.

Chapter 3(Sam’s POV)

Max and I looked identical when we were in our fighting stances. We fought with the same speed, and agility. I was panting when I was done. Max was next to me. I caught Fang’s expression. Fang loved Max and he felt that I was taking her away from him

“Max, Fang feels like I’m taking you from him, you should go stand next to him.” I murmured to her. She nodded slightly and went to talk to Fang. Suddenly, I started getting dizzy. It was a hot day out, I’ll admit. Iggy’s fingers felt icy cold. I tried to shriek as he ran his fingers across my forehead.

“Max, should she be sweating like that?” Iggy asked, concern and fear tinted his voice.

Max put the back of her hand on my forehead. I stumbled back from the cold.

“Crud.” She muttered. I fell to the cave floor. I closed my eyes and shivered as Max put her hand back on my forehead. I curled into a tight ball. I was sweating really hard now. I was panting as I tried to get a breath.

“Sam, it’s okay.” I heard Iggy’s voice right next to my ear. I shook my head no and tried to scream as I spiraled into blackness.

“Sam, wake up.” Fang said, wait Fang?

“I thought you hated me.” I said groggily.

“I’ll try to trust you, but one bad move and you’re gone.” He said. I nodded.
